VicRoads has developed a new Coordinated Freeway Ramp Signal pilot system, inbound on Melbourne's Monash Freeway between Jacksons Road and Warrigal Road. The system smooths traffic by dynamically regulating and balancing traffic flow from freeway entry ramps to:

  • Maximise freeway throughput;
  • Reduce flow breakdown and congestion;
  • Automatically respond to congestion caused by unplanned incidents;
  • Assist recovery after an incident; and
  • Minimise impacts and improve travel on feeder arterial roads.

Since its implementation, drivers on this section of the Monash Freeway are saving more than $90,000 per day in vehicle operating costs. Inbound peak hour time savings of up to five minutes are being experienced with accident reductions of more than 30 percent.
