The brief seemed impossible: design and build a unique Rock Bolting Rig for Australia’s largest single resource Project.

The machine had to secure the Chevron-operated Gorgon Project domestic gas pipeline to the seabed off Western Australia’s cyclone-prone north-west coast, whilst meeting strict environmental and safety requirements.

The Perth-based team of engineers Robert Elks & Associates, contractor SapuraClough Offshore and fabricator Phillips Engineering rejected impossibility. They set new standards of teamwork to design and manufacture a unique machine to successfully secure the domestic gas pipeline. They demonstrated that the skills and technology to complete such high-value manufacturing are available in Australia.
